The Best Chicken Burger (according to me)
Big fast food chains have shoveled millions of dollars into keeping up good, clean reputations with the public. In August of 2019, several of these respectable restaurants and supermarkets locked horns in what has now been dubbed the Great Chicken Sandwich War of '19.
That month, the Popeye's chain just released a new chicken sandwich to be served at all restaurants nationwide. Offended, Chick-fil-A took to Twitter in a not-so-subtle mock post: "Bun + Chicken + Pickles = all the ❤︎ for the original." Popeye's responded by retweeting the post with the caption, "...y'all good?"
Other chains got involved too. Wendy's decided to weigh in with a tweet saying, "Y’all out here fighting about which of these fools has the second best chicken sandwich." Popeye's promptly shot back: "Sounds like someone just ate one of our biscuits. Cause y’all looking thirsty."
This war saw no victor, only a field of soldiers wounded by the overuse of "y'all."
Prep: 10 min | Cooking: 15 min | 25 min
Makes 4 burgers
Chicken breasts (2)
Bacon, cooked according to package instructions (8 strips)
Salt and pepper
Honey (1/4 cup)
Dijon mustard (1/4 cup)
Provolone cheese (4 slices)
Burger buns (4)
Tomatoes, sliced (4 slices)
Lettuce (enough for 4 burgers)
Avocados, sliced (8 wedges)
Preheat grill to medium heat. Beat chicken breasts with a mallet until they can be cut into two pieces that somewhat match the size of your buns. Rub salt and pepper into the breasts. In a small bowl, mix honey and Dijon mustard.
Grill about 6-7 minutes on each side or until browned. While the second sides are cooking, paint each half breast with the mustard-honey mix, place two bacon strips on top, and cover with a slice of cheese. Shut grill lid and allow cheese to melt. Remove chicken from heat. Toast buns.
Assemble each burger as follows: bottom bun, tomato slice, lettuce, chicken slice, two avocado slices, top bun. Serve with potato chips and a pickle.
